Holy shit! Chthonic frontman Freddy Lim was rcampaigning in recent months for a run at political office in Taiwan. The election was this past weekend and on January 16 it was announced that Lim had bested his competition and will soon be sworn into office!
According to Focus Taiwan, Lim has been elected as a legislator in Taipei's 5th district under the newly established New Power Party. Lim bested his competition Lin Yu-fang of the Kuomintang by over 6,000 votes, which is really, truly incredible.
We spoke to Freddy about his decision to run with an in-depth interview, and he said the political movement of the youth in the country was growing strong, which is what helped him decide to run:
I’ve been participating civil movements and public issues in Taiwan for a long time. I also served as the chair of Amnesty International Taiwan for 4 years (2 terms), and continue to push for political reforms. Many social movements in the past 2-3 years in Taiwan are the result of higher political participation among the younger generation. The call for reform by the Minister of Defense back in 2013 motivated 250,000 supporters to march. And the Sunflower Movement in 2014 also brought 500,000 people to the street after occupying the Legislature, just to name a few. All these newly established social awareness and forged the critical juncture for a new political party to form. Also for the same reason, my friends and I devoted ourselves to the election one after another.
So we wish Lim the best of luck in his political career and hope that we'll still get Chthonic albums as much as time permits for someone with that type of schedule.
