Isis

The post-metal kingpins of the new millennium, Isis were perhaps one of the most influential, and imitated bands of their generation. Albums like 2002’s Oceanic and its 2004 follow up Panopticon, showcased the bands numerous talents. Lumbering riffs and gorgeous atmospherics all drenched in Aaron Turner’s torturous roar, Isis’ wistful presentation of metal and post-rock won praise from the extreme music underworld and “normal,” mainstream media alike. This was a band that could seemingly do no wrong and appeared destined to enjoy a lengthy career full critical homeruns à la Neurosis, when they suddenly decided to call it quits in 2010. Opting to go out on top after accomplishing all of their intended musical/career goals, Isis’ members have remained active in the music world just as their band’s name has been in the headlines thanks to increased hostilities in the Middle East. Terrorist organizations aside, a new Isis record would definitely be welcome now, or anytime in the future.
