Xentrix – "Reckless With A Smile"
On their 7th LP Seven Words UK thrash mavens Xentrix have continued to carve its way into its particular nook. Obsidious – "I Am"
Guitarist Rafael Trujillo, bassist Linus Klausenitzer, and drummer Sebastian Lanser
left their previous outfit Obscura behind a few years ago, added vocalist Javi Perera, and sunk even deeper into a dense template of tech-death/prog metal intricacy. Guttural vocal verse segues into soaring, melodic clean chorus, symphonic surges surround trench-warfare riffage criss-crossing darkness and light like a dirtier Dream Theater at times. Defleshed – "Heavy Haul"
After ducking out in 2005, Sweden's Defleshed return in fine form and doing what they excel in: stomping-to-hell nonstop thrashing. With guitar solos wiped completely on the side, cuz, well, they just get in the way, the band is severe and unrelenting. Defleshed's message is one of economy, bile, and no nonsense. Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs – "Mr. Medicine"
With a heavy fuzz crackle intro, the space-rock thuds in, and Britain's Pigs X7 are back on the throne as one of the leading lights in stoner/FX-laden/doom. Short and sweet, "Mr. Medicine" hammers repetitive towering riffs into your cortex while cavernous vocals and massive flange walls massage the rest of your brain nodes. The spirit of Sab and Hawkwind loom heavily while still injecting modernist elements to turn heads and claim its own psychedelic terrain. Looking forward to the Land of Sleeper full-length headed your way like an acid-soaked asteroid in February.
Choke – "Deranged"
From the land of beer and cheese, Wisconsin's Choke emits a foul pollutant over their land with smothering, spaceless deathgrind. Immediately destroying everything in sight with zero 4-count intro, the claustrophobic dynamic Choke induces leaves melody as an afterthought. Hell, at times, the sheer discerning of actual chords seems almost nonexistent in identity as the guitar becomes a blended-in element with the percussion and hiss, joining the full-on battery attack of Dustin Hansen's grimy throat. Unrelenting mess achieved with power and precision.
