Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds gives no fucks. He'll show up to the Grammys wasted out of his mind and get kicked out for dropping his weed, he'll make silly commercials for his friend's restaurant, and he'll show up on Game of Thrones if he wants to! And he'll certainly speak his mind when he wants to. A few of Hinds quotes were featured in a piece by Guitar Player recently, I hesitate to say it's an interview because there are no questions, because Brent hates interviews saying "I don’t like doing interviews, I don’t read interviews, I don’t need to know how people go about doing things. It frustrates me to do interviews, because I have to talk about things I’ve talked about over and over and over and over again."
The big revelation that is sure to upset somebody (but really is not the biggest deal) is Hinds revealing he's not much of a metalhead:
"I never really liked heavy metal in the first place. I came from Alabama playing country music, surf rock, rockabilly, and stuff like that. I just went through a phase in my 20s where I thought it was rebellious to play heavy metal. And then I met Brann [Dailor, Mastodon drummer] and Bill [Kelliher], and they were really, really, really into heavy metal. And ever since then, I’ve been trying to get Mastodon to not be such a heavy metal band, because I fucking hate heavy metal, and I don’t want to be in a heavy metal band.
It makes perfect sense to me. Perhaps all of those early Mastodon fans have Bill and Brann to thank and then as time went out Brent had further influence on the band's sound. But I still can't figure out whose idea this trippy cat "Asleep In The Deep" video they just released was.
