Avenged Sevenfold's Synyster Gates, known by his family as Brian Haner Jr., is one hell of a guitarist. Gates studied jazz and classical guitar in college and is the son of phenomenal guitarist Brian Haner Sr. While we've heard some of Gates' work as a jazz and flamenco guitarist in Avenged Sevenfold, we might hear much more in the context of his own solo work eventually.
Gates tells Ultimate Guitar that he wants to work on his own jazz solo album, he's just not sure when.
You started exploring jazz in recent years. Is there any other genre that wanted to explore but didn’t get the chance to?
“Yeah. Classical and flamenco. I’m really starting to kind of get into that. I’m working on my Rasgueado, like whips and all that kind of crazy stuff.
“I have some really cool ideas – ideas I’m really excited about doing for the next album with some really cool rhythmic Rasgueado-style type of things. I just don’t know how to do it yet.”
Will you ever record your own jazz solo album?
“Yes, I will.”
When?
“That I don’t know.”
In the meantime, keep an eye out for a brand new Avenged Sevenfold song coming sometime this July.
