After an embarrassing year last year for the Best Metal Performance Grammy, a year in which Tenacious D won the prize, this year, the Grammy board clearly stepped it up and nominated some actual metal bands.
Here are this year's nominees:
- August Burns Red – "Identity"
- Ghost "Cirice"
- Lamb of God "512"
- Sevendust "Thank You"
- Slipknot "Custer"
Additionally, Slipknot's .5: The Gray Chapter is nominated for Best Rock Album along side artists like Muse and Death Cab for Cutie.
I am very happy for the bands that are nominated because for once this is an actual reflection on what modern metal is, and not just a bunch old bands that Grammy voters recognized fueled by covers of even older metal artists. It will be interesting to see who picks up the trophy, and even more interesting to see Ghost's Papa Emeritus scaring everybody on the red carpet on Grammy night.
