Gimme Metal Program Director Brian Turner delivers the week's top 5 office buzz-worthy tracks.
Tribulation – "Hamartia"
A gothic gallop and Sweden's Tribulation are out of the gate with this new single followup to last year's awesome Where the Gloom Becomes Sound LP and another 18-minute opus "The Dhampir". Psychedelic and spiritual, Tribulation lifts from spiritual themes and crafts its potent sound into layered, strident gestures that soar melodically while plumbing the depths simultaneously. A welcome return to usher in a fall Euro tour with Watain and Abbath. Get their previous album Where The Gloom Becomes Sound on vinyl here via Gimme Metal.
Morbikon – "Cursed To Walk on Shattered Limbs"
Black metal of the highest order with some down/dirty death thrown in for good measure. We all know Phil "Landphil" Hall from Municipal Waste, Iron Reagan, and Cannabis Corpse, but throw in drummer extraordinaire Dave Witte (Municipal Waste, Discordance Axis etc.) and Mathias “Vreth” Lillmåns (Finntroll, …And Oceans) and dig this highly eclectic bag of stylistic mayhem. Scurrying between blackened guitar flurries and epic, almost proglike breakdowns all accompanied by that grim voice, the new debut LP Ov Mournful Twilight (out October 28 on Tankcrimes) is destined to be a severe headturner. Pre-order Ov Mournful Twilight here via Gimme Metal.
OFF! – "Kill To Be Heard"
Whoa, Off! are back and slammin' it. Keith Morris sounds eternally young, I expected more off their style of driving punk but this taps into that part of the Circle Jerks' well that dipped its toe in metal, but not only that but it starts off in almost black metal mode! A fast blast on a runaway train with anthemic speed, lookin forward to the forthcoming Free LSD on Fat Possum due imminently. Pre-order Free LSD (unfortunately not free or LSD) here via Gimme Metal.
Dream Unending – "Secret Grief"
The band's sophomore effort Song of Salvation (20 Buck Spin) creeps through a cavernous mind-soundtrack. Atmospheric keyboards envelop the room like fog with gurgling vocals spreading out like an element in the mist, subaquatic bubbles of melodies emanate in a way that evokes a deathly My Bloody Valentine or Skepticism. Considering the duo of Justin DeTore and Derrick Vella have done time in the likes of Tomb Mold and Innumerable Forms, this wistful direction is a bit of a surprise, though not one that should shun fans of said combos. Enjoy the smoke.
Brant Bjork – "Bread For Butter"
Start they key to the 65 Mustang, blast some exhaust and head to the desert with the latest from BB, chockfull of traditional muzz-boogie riffage. James Gang and ZZ Top filtered riffs through a fuzzplex of glorious analog beauty. A bareboned and naked groove slowly gathers dust with guitar solos, woo-woo backing vocals and then back into that hypnotic riff that drives into the sunset. Look out for Bougainvillea Suite out October 28 on Heavy Psych Sounds.
