Make Your Own DREAM THEATER Song Using This Technical Metal Generator

Metal music is often theatrical in nature, yet nowhere in metal is that sensibility more prevalent than in the realm of progressive metal music. To the point that even fans of technical and progressive music are aware of the inherent over-the-top nature of the music they like. With that in mind, guitarist Pete Cottrell just posted a hilarious video pondering the idea of writing odd time signature music through a randomized system of determining the tempo, key and time signature of a piece of music. And then writing music out of the resulting combination that arises through rolling dice and picking scrabble tiles.

Whether or not this methodology is indeed how Dream Theater writes their music is unknown, but I'd consider it a possibility at the least! Beyond cracking me up, the resulting "randomized" pieces of music Pete constructs through this method are pretty damn interesting in themselves. Though the skeptic in me wonders if the ideas he is playing weren't constructed first and then the video and concept was created around it to fit together. And not the other way around. But that's just me nitpicking.
