Gimme Metal Program Director Brian Turner delivers the week's top 5 office buzz-worthy tracks.
ÔROS KAÙ – Set the Controls For the Heart of the Sun
Translated "Pisces Aires", this one-man Belgian project is all about transmutation, as evidenced by this completely slaughtering version of one of Pink Floyd's most psychedelic compositions. Expansive in sound yet relentlessly claustrophobic in its pummel, the 'Imperii Templum Aires' album came out in June, but now being reissued on vinyl with I, Voidhanger.
GLORIOUS DEPRAVITY – Digital Reaper
Destructive death metal out of Brooklyn featuring luminaries from Pyrrhon, Woe, Mutilation Rites, Belus and Cleanteeth. Through the onslaught, riffs scurry like murder hornets while the relentless drumming maintains a constant low end flurry to act as a springboard for insane riffage and blasting solos that elevate out of the aural septic tank that is GD. A dynamic and amazing band to say the least.
HROM – Stargunner
From the frozen (or getting there now) northlands of Calgary, Hrom appeared in the last decade started by Slovak-Canadian Jan Loncik ("Hrom" is Slovak for "thunder"). Through various evolutions and prime locals gigs (with the likes of Diamond Head and Ross the Boss) leading up the latest release 'Legends of Powerheart: Part II', the band radiates classic metal fandom and precise execution. There's some fierce power/speed gallop in this sweet slab of Albertan Steel, Loncik's rich and layered vocal sear is gonna break some ice out there! Look out for a Gimme DJ special December 21st.
MASTER BOOT RECORD – C:\DEFRAG
Here it comes again, Mr. Avant Chiptune himself, galloping your way like Iron Maiden making a jabbering bot call into your stereo speakers. The best review lives on the MBR You Tube page: "066 097 099 107 119 097 114 100 032 097 110 100 032 102 111 114 119 097 114 100 032 119 101 032 119 097 108 107 032 105 110 032 097 032 108 105 110 101 013 010 079 118 101 114 032 097 032 115 113 117 097 114 101 032 109 097 100 101 032 111 102 032 115 112 097 099 101 032 097 110 100 032 116 105 109 101 013 010 066 101 104 111 108 100 032 116 104 101 032 110 117 109 098 101 114 115 032 115 111 109 101 116 105 109 101 115 032 099 097 110 032 108 105 101 013 010 078 111 116 032 097 108 108 032 111 102 032 116 104 101 109 032 105 110 032 111 114 100 101 114 032 121 111 117 039 108 108 032 102 105 110 100 046 013 010 013 010 067 108 117 115 116 101 114 115 032 111 102 032 100 097 116 097 046 013 010 083 101 099 116 111 114 115 032 097 110 100 032 102 105 108 101 115 046 013 010 079 118 101 114 032 097 110 100 032 111 118 101 114 046 013 010 078 101 101 100 032 116 111 032 ."
OVTRENOIR – Wires
The Parisian band Ovtrenoir definitely have some post-HC elements floating around in their hateful attack, yet the slight undertow in rhythm reveals them to also be into long one-chord sludge assault while propelling ever-forward. The French metal scene seems to always be drawing from multiple wells and being casually futuristic, meaning they do what they do and let the musical alchemy create itself. Such is the case here, and on the band's 'Fields of Fire' LP.
