In an interview with Billboard, Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci said the band have already begun to plan out their next record a little bit.
Petrucci said about the writing:
"Some initial conversations have already started," the guitarist-producer-lyricist tells Billboard. "There are some song ideas and little things like that — nothing really official, but the seeds just start to get planted. One of the great things about this career is that you have the opportunity every time to go in and start again with a blank slate and think, 'What can we do differently? How can we make this better?' Where can we go from here?' Every album has a story, and to constantly have a fresh opportunity to do it is really satisfying."
I'm interested to see where the band goes after their self-titled that was released only a few months ago (Sept. 24, 2013). This was their second record without founding drummer Mike Portnoy, and also the second record they've put out that I've genuinely loved since 2008's Octavarium. Maybe Mike Mangini was the magic touch they needed? Plus Dream Theater went in a pretty retro-prog direction without a heaping spoonful of heavy, which was an awesome combination.
