10 Songs For Satan

Loud creepy music scares the crap out of regular folk, just like tales of fire and brimstone have freaked people out since The Middle Ages.

Loud creepy music scares the crap out of regular folk, just like tales of fire and brimstone have freaked people out since The Middle Ages.

Since its inception, the metal realm has often been associated with the Devil… sort of, "In League With Satan" if you will. It makes sense, loud creepy music scares the crap out of regular folk, just like tales of fire and brimstone have freaked people out since The Middle Ages. Lucifer was a vain and egotistical angel who was cast down from paradise for that fiery independent streak of his. Instead, he ventured "South of Heaven" to start his own band/kingdom and show Lars and James he could make it on his own. He's basically the archetype for every disenfranchised young metal head…ever. The Devil's even got a thousand different nicknames, like metal and it's nigh unlimited amount of sub-genres. In honor of Halloween, we've decided to compile a list of some of our favorite Songs for Satan, a selection of head banging tunes to help get in the holiday spirit and/or scare the crap out of impressionable trick-or-treaters.

Oh and because as Gaahl once said, black metal is primarily about Satan:

We've decided to focus on Satanic jams from other metal genres. Don't get your bullet belts in a twist, we'll cover those another time. So now, as Tom Araya once said, "enter to the realm of SATAN!"

Black Sabbath – "Lord of This World"

Your world was made for you by someone above
But you choose evil ways instead of love
You made me master of the world where you exist
The soul I took from you was not even missed

Although Tony Iommi flaunted the ‘Devil’s Interval’ on Black Sabbath’s world shaking debut album, the band itself were not actual devil worshippers. In fact the Sabbath lads, from Ozzy on down, have never shied away from their Christian beliefs. That being said, that hasn’t stopped the band from writing about ol’ Lucifer from time to time. Geezer Butler’s take on Beelzebub waxing philosophical with one of his woeful new recruits is a fascinating read, to accompany one of the band’s raddest songs.

Goatwhore – "FBS"

Fucked by Satan
Demon god
Thrusting forth
This lustful act defile the pure

The lads in Goatwhore have been praising the ol’ hooved one for years. Their smash single “Apocalyptic Havoc” even spawned the popular phrase/t-shirt: “Who needs a God when you’ve got Satan?” Still, perhaps their most profound soliloquy to the dark lord stems from their latest album, Constricting Rage of the Merciliess’ eloquently titled, “FBS” aka Fucked By Satan. Once you get forked tongued…there’s no going back.

Ghost – "Con Clavi Con Dio"

Lucifer
We Are Here
For Your Praise
Evil One

The PMRC witch hunters of the 1980’s that freaked out over Twisted Sister and Van Halen would have lost their friggin minds over a band like Ghost. Ardent Satanists with a frontman dressed as a literal, anti-Pope, who craft some of the sweetest sounding pop tinged hard rock in decades. Take the opening words from their debut album, Opus Eponymous. Talk about mass appeal blasphemy.

Mercyful Fate – "The Oath"

In the name of Satan, the ruler of Earth
Open wide the gates of Hell and come forth from the abyss
By these names: Satan, Leviathan, Belial, Lucifer
I will kiss the goat

Unlike the Sabbath’s and Maiden’s of the oldschool metal circuit who sang about the devil in a figurative or literary sense, Mercyful Fate’s iconic frontman, the one and only King Diamond was not fucking around when it came to his devotion to the dark lord. Mercyful Fate’s epic riffs and flashy songwriting, coupled with the King’s otherworldly vocals and extravagantly blasphemous lyrics, were the gateway drug for a whole generation of corpse painted Satanists to explore.

The Oath – "All Must Die"

Lucifer rise, Lucifer rise
Rise like the stars
Rise like the morning light
Rise like the sun
And blind my eyes

The Oath self-destructed far too quickly. Thankfully, their one uber infectious and wildly evil NWOBHM inspired album, All Must Die, will continue to seduce unassuming rockers for years to come. Johanna Sadonis' heavenly vocals mask her legit attempt to summon the dark lord from below. A bonafide Satanic toe tapper if there ever was one. An awesome trait Sadonis continues in her new Hell-centric doom band, aptly named: Lucifer.
