SACRED REICH – Awakening

Well, count these Phoenix thrash godfathers among the ranks of those making surprisingly great comebacks. Awakening is the first LP since 1996 (aside from a live release, the only studio utterance to date is a split 7" with Iron Reagan this year. Phil Rind sounds totally majestic and on the money. Previewing the album it does get into some mid-tempo mire but it provides killer contrast to when they get cookin' and blasted.

LEVIATHAN – Of Hive and Haunted Sea

From an ornately packaged 4LP compilation 'Verrater' out on Profound Lore in November, Gimme host Andee Connors of Battleflutes and Sideways Skulls fame first issued this as a 2CD set on his own tUMULt label in 2002, giving most a first glance into the dark world of Bay Area local Wrest. Comprised of demos/CDR tracks from 98-02, the stumbling/quiet intro of this particular track gives way to a powerful blast of emotion and textures recorded via modest means. One of the true kings of one-man black metal.

VASTUM – Reveries In Autophagia

Some more legendary Bay Area players, this iconic death/doom outfit features members of Gimme faves Necrot, Acephalix and more. 'Orificial Purge' is out October 25th on 20 Buck Spin.

FORTRESS – On the Streets Again

Good old school metal redux out of Whittier, California from a brand new split 7" with Gimme staples (and fellow Cali pals) Haunt. It's not out til December, but pre-orders at Fortress' Bandcamp.

KICK AXE – The Chain

Since the Highwomen have breathed life into the living corpse of Fleetwood Mac again in the country world with this song, we have to share the metal equivalent!
Completely kickass/axe! Blazing 80's slick reverb-drenched production, this is really the epitome of how this song should sound; you can almost hear the actual sound of the coke being shovelled up all ten of the Mac's collective nostrils.
