Gimme Metal's Top Tracks of the Week

MAYHEM, T.O.M.B., KROSIS Among The Top Tracks of the Week

mayhem 2019

Every Thursday, Gimme Radio Program Director, Brian Turner, delivers the top 5 jaw-dropping tracks on Gimme Radio.

T.O.M.B. – Decapitation of the Gods

Return of these jackhammer-industrial tinged metal destroyers, once again joined by Mayhem's Hellhammer on drum duty. Assaultive blast furnace of aural carnage, gutteral howls, occult imagery, general disorientation and flogging of the senses. These burners have been around 20 years now, and the new LP 'Thin the Veil' is out this week on Dark Essence.

KROSIS – To Persist or Adhere

While we enjoy our share of no-fi, speakers-caked-with-mud, down-n-dirty dirge bands here in the column, much respect to those who take on the ultimate challenge of hyper-technical, mega-produced progressive insanity much the way these Raleigh maniacs do. Dense and complex fuckery abounds here on this clip, and the LP is forthcoming for February 2020.

OBSEQUIAE – In the Garden of Hyacinths

From the forthcoming 'Palms of Sorrowed Kings' (20 Buck Spin, November 22), a sampling of what core member Tanner Anderson has gotten up to since the critically-praised 2015 'Aria of Vernal Tombs'. Based in Minnesota, the music is sweeping and evocative of European/ even smatterings of Celtic traditional sounds, large looming landscapes, epic guitar solos, melody, skewered with grim vox and dark vibes abounding. A very vivid picture of one man's sound vision.

MAYHEM – Of Worms and Ruin

Mayhem's 'Daemon' hit this week and though they allegedly were going back to their raw/sparse early punk roots, they've opted instead to make a claustrophobic, layered and very much forward-moving record that continues to build on their legacy of fury and controversy. Saw them live in great form this past July in Europe and am now hearing more subtlety in the live material presented here on record, yet no less epic and blown out than their stage vibe. A very good Mayhem record!

DEATH SS – Werewolf

Had to pick one for Halloween, and opting to not go for the obvious! From the Italian masters' 1988 debut 'Death of Steve Sylvester', this lot took obvious cues from Sabbath, Alice, and NWOBHM but trumped it all up with their own injection of horror as only the Italians know how to do: "This night I'll tear you into pieces!
My claws will caress your corpse/and your blood will satiate my thirst/'cause tonight I'm a Werewolf!" Some things have to be explained afterall.
