Gimme Metal Program Director Brian Turner delivers the week's top 5 office buzz-worthy tracks.
GENGHIS TRON – Dream Weapon
Back after a long absence, Hamilton Jordan and Michael Sochynsky's fabled Genghis Tron returns, joined by two new members: vocalist Tony Wolski and Sumac/Baptists drummer Nick Yacyshyn. Full of crushing rhythms but overriding dreamlike vibe, the band builds upon layers of frenetic energy that elevates into a trancy state not unlike Boris with say more synths. It's dense, full of left turns and varied instrumentation, gorgeous harmonized vocals and lush electronics, but heavy indeed, and thread with a very precise needle to coalesce all its sums of parts into one interesting setting. The LP of the same name is out March 22nd on Relapse.
THE LIMIT – Black Sea
Soul doom? This is, I have to say, a pretty surprising release from a crew I would never expect to be making it together. We've got Bobby Liebling (Pentagram legend), Sonny Vincent (CBGB denizen from the days of The Testors/Fury), Jimmy Recca (one of the incarnations of The Stooges, plus Stooge Ron Asheton's New Order), Hugo Conim and João Pedro Ventura from Portugese band Dawnrider; this is kinda what you'd imagine a Stooges/Testors/Pentagram summit to sound like. Liebling vox are still strong, melodic hooks a plenty, with minor chord downer vibe looming cloudlike overhead. The full 'Caveman Logic' LP is out in April on Svart.
THE CROWN – Motordeath
Thirty years down the road, Sweden's The Crown are still a major force to be reckoned with peddling their melodic-yet-brutarian brand of death metal, well in line with their country's forebearers of the art. Looking forward to the forthcoming 'Royal Destroyer' out March 12 on Metal Blade.
GIMLI, SON OF GLÓIN – Nary A Man Nor Beast Shall Outsmart The Refined Skills Of A Dwarf of Erebor
As well chronicled in Greg Kennelty's Metal Injection piece last week, the world's foremost Gimli-themed metal band is back after a 2019 release with their latest 'At Last; Durin's Mightiest Son Returns To The Field Of Battle With Axe In Hand And Glory In His Heart!'. The Southampton UK band only uses Gimli samples as vocal material, and musically is no folky troll-dance around a fire but rather a roaring furnace blast of rhythmic destruction and buzzsaw riffery. The band hosts a Gimme DJ special Saturday, February 20th at 12pm PT/3pm ET!
SEROTONIN LEAKAGE – Untitled
Spurting liquid foul riffage and disgusting vocals are just a few of the positive points of this new split release with Charcuterie on Horror Pain Gore Death. Personally hailing from Pennsylvania just like SL's sole purveyor Dr. Dank (ex-Human Pancake), I consider this indigenous regional folk music the same way Bakersfield sent forth Buck Owens. Oh, and don't miss HPGD's main man Mike Juliano as he guest DJs on Gimme Metal on Friday, February 12.
