The Ontario, one-man black metal project Unreqvited makes a return this year. If you recall in 2016, Unreqvited's self-released debut album, Disquiet, emerged. The Canadian, known as 鬼, unleashed a somber DSBM that called to frozen woodlands. Now, roughly 18 months later, he's back. A new album is on the horizon, entitled Stars Wept to the Sea. This new effort is certainly a worthy follow-up to the riveting debut. It showcases a marked progression for 鬼 and consequently makes tracks like "Stardust" enthralling.
Wept to the Sea's third track is the slew of crystalline keys that run over soaring guitar riffs. Much like Disquiet, this new track exudes a sense of triumph in the face of a genre often rooted in despair. Within the track's final minute or so, a woman's angelic voice surfaces through the mix, accompanied by distant birds. The savvy inclusion puts a wonderfully evocative bow on this first single from the new record. However, each instance on this track is worth careful attention.
