It’s Monday and Mondays suck, so let’s grind it out with Slund’s Lean Mean Slunding Machine.
It’s time for another dose of smooth jazz. Something nice, light and fluffy to get you into that relaxation mode. Some nice music to massage your nerves and make the day a little easier. And what better way to do that than with Slovenia’s one-man show Slund? There is nothing more soothing. This is the lavender bath bomb of grindcore.
Lean Mean Slunding Machine is one of the latest releases from Slund. I say one of because since this came out, another came out and I’ve been doing so many premieres in the last month that Slund managed to also crank out a split with Puta Malaria in that time. Maybe a week for The Monday Grind was missed in there too. Who knows. I can barely remember what day it is usually.
Thirteen tracks in about four minutes. It’s short, but that’s grindcore for you. The nineteen-second blaster “The Slund Machine” opens things up with a quick question: “Wanna die?” And then we’re off into glorious blast land. It’s a reminder that Slund is one of those bands that has a sense of humor that shines above a lot of modern grind bands, motherslunder.
Tracks like “What’s Up With That” talk about how the hell is U2 still high in the charts despite sucking for so many years. Other tracks like “They” pull quotes from films like Billy Madison to highlight the stupidity of the situation just talked about. “AGR” goes over the logic behind Alligator having three letters in its name.
The crowning achievement here is “Fighting the Dragon With the Power of Steel.” A little bit of falsetto opens the track like Slund is stepping to ManOwar, and then the track takes off asking, “What the fuck is the power of steel?” Anyone even remotely versed in power metal shenanigans will know exactly where this is going from the title alone, even without reading the lyrics. Which are hilarious.
Four minutes later, Lean Mean Slunding Machine closes off. So, I say just hit that replay button and keep on going for a few more rounds. Slund makes some of the most entertaining grind currently. It’s not technical, but it is raw and filthy as hell. For a one-man grinding unit, Slund is a damn machine. And if there’s something to take away from this, it’s that Alligator is always the right answer. Get grinding on this bucket of bullshit now!
