It’s Monday and Mondays suck, so let’s grind it out with Burst Synapse There Are No Paths Left From This Place.
Those that follow this column can welcome back Toronto, Ontario’s Burst Synapse. Over the past year the cybergrind community has been growing a lot. This one-person project alone has put out several EPs which you have likely seen here. And in the span of that year, the sound has grown tremendously, as you are about to see. If you are not sold on cybergrind yet, you will be after this.
The first track is “Cement Dunes”, a slice of cybergrind with some heavy EMD underbelly. Things kick off with a short, erratic distorted beat, a scream, and then falls into a kind of noisegrind/noisecore territory. As the track moves on it pans out, gets bassier but remains very noisy. As it breaks down and guitar riffs are fed through a delay, drums get layered on top and things finish off feeling uneasy.
Following this is “Paligenetic Ultraviolence.” The crash cymbal breaks like glass and things cybergrind forward. The real art of this track is how much chaos gets layers on moment by moment. It is like a large crescendo of electronic drums, noise, blasts that suddenly break. It’s even got a mathcore kind of vibe to it. Ultimately, things come to a swell and we are left with a very death metal-sounding guitar tone, and finishing with a very metallic hardcore break.
“Brutal Hope” closes off the EP and is probably the most aggressive of the three tracks. This is the fighting song of the record. All two minutes of it are pure pit violence. Noise kicks it into gear and leads us to a symposium of blasts and vocals that move between shrill and growling. Whether the track is going full locomotive or slowing down to a hardcore break, this thing is vicious.
The amount of genres that Burst Synapse is able to command and plug into their sound is Frankenstein-esque. And I mean that in a good way. The fact that this project is only a year old and has come as far as it has is very impressive. And I hope and imagine things are only going to get more twisted from here. Get grinding on this!
