Decibel Clips of the Month January 2015: AT THE GATES, BLOODBATH, TRIPTYKON & NAPALM DEATH Classic Clip

Every month, Decibel scribe Shane Mehling reviews the four videos that appear in the monthly metal mag. under “Decibel’s Clips of the Month at Metal Injection.” This month, watch picks from At the Gates, Bloodbath, Triptykon and a classic clip from Napalm Death.

At the Gates – “Heroes & Tombs”

In a land of incomprehensible metal videos, this can still hold its own when it comes to making absolutely no goddamn sense. But then maybe it’s about ancient aliens? Like whatever that guy on TV says about E.T.s building the pyramids? I think that’s maybe what’s going on here, except then there’s snow, and by the way, it’s a cartoon. It’s a black and white cartoon, and maybe these are aliens, and maybe that thing is a pyramid. But please don’t let this description make you think this isn’t boring, because it’s real fucking boring.

Bloodbath – “Church of Vastitas”

All right, well this isn’t exactly crazy exciting either. All we have are tracking shots (also in black and white) of a church and a graveyard and some trees, and I think I saw a few birds, and then this guy in a cloak singing the song. So, that is pretty much what we’re working with here, but if you turn the sound off you can make believe this is an episode of Cribs where the dude is just saying, “Yeah, this is the darkened corridor where I keep my Xbox and Scarface poster. And this is where the magic happens, right on this broken tombstone covered in ivy.”

Triptykon – “Tree of Suffocating Souls”

Great. Like a year ago I wrote about a video where nothing happens and I knew I was dooming myself when another video showed up where nothing happened, and not only does nothing happen in this video, but nothing happens for almost eight minutes. It’s the band playing in the dark. That is the full description. Tom G. Warrior is still wearing that knit cap, though, which I guess he’s trying to make into a Slash top hat thing? I’d honestly like to know, if anyone can email me.

CLASSIC CLIP: Napalm Death – “Greed Killing”

Okay, so take that ancient aliens idea from the first video, but just make them look real ‘90s, because this is about as ‘90s as humanly possible. It’s Napalm Death playing in a weird jail while some people in old Bono glasses observe them until I guess the probing starts. But again, you should watch this because holy shit is this video caught in a time capsule. Crazy colorful and oversaturated with all these blurry camera tricks and close-ups. I watched “In the Meantime” by Spacehog after this, and it really did not look that different. Please enjoy.
