With Anthrax on the verge of releasing their Persistence of Time special edition, I guess it's gotten drummer Charlie Benante nostalgic for old times. As he dug through his archives, he found an amazing photo of himself,. guitarist Scott Ian and WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan.
According to Benante, they were playing a venue right next door to where Hogan was wrestling one night and they were able to take the snap.
Benante reveals "Whatcha gonna do when #Hulkamania runs wild on You! Man… this pic just freaks me out so much. We were playing an arena in Michigan (I think?) and wrestle mania was going on in the next building. We had a chance to talk to Hulk Hogan and get this"
I don't mean to be a bummer, but sadly this was not the night of WrestleMania in Michigan. That would be the famous WrestleMania III match in Pontiac, Michigan, where Hogan slammed Andre the Giant. It happened on March 29, 1987. I looked up two different pages with Anthrax dates from 1987, and they were nowhere near Michigan. In fact, they played Japan on March 25, 1987. I am in no way calling Charlie a liar, he himself makes it clear he doesn't remember the exact date.
Still, it would've been cool to be a fly on the wall for that conversation.
Hulk Hogan made metal headlines a few years ago with his wild, unfounded claim, that he tried to audition for Metallica, something drummer Lars Ulrich categorically denied and frontman James Hetfield had a great laugh about many years later.
Pre-orders for the reissue of Persistence of Time are available here. The reissue comes out on August 21.
