Can you tell we're really excited about the new Slipknot release? We can tell you guys are really excited, so we're trying to keep you as informed as possible about this new album without turning this site into Slipknot Injection. (Hey, we've got a ton of non-Slipknot news on the main page if that's what you're looking for.)
But anyway, yesterday Kerrang! published an except from their new issue which goes on sale today in the UK. Yesterday, Corey talked about the look of the new masks. Today, Corey talks about the lyrical content of the new album.
“It’s very dark,” he nods. “It’s some of the darkest writing I’ve done in years. In the Slipknot index, this album would sit somewhere between [2001 second album] Iowa and [2004 third album] Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses). Lyrically, it has the force of Iowa, but musically it has the heaviness but the experimentation as well. It was very important for us to go somewhere crazy and make something insane.”
Corey adds “I was able to let that pain go,” Corey explains. “It means that I can kind of enjoy everything for what it is now. It’s night and day from where I was two and a half years ago, so now I can listen to the music and go, ‘Jesus Christ!’ But, at the same time, it helps to know where I was. It’s one thing to record something heavy; it’s another to forget what inspired it. And, for me, that will never go away. My memory is long. I can tap into that, but that’s it.”
This echos what Corey said back in January about the last few years being a dark time in his life, but thankfully he's seemingly gotten through it. There's a reason the new Slipknot album is among our most anticipated for 2019.
