Last month, Corey Taylor begun work on ideas for lyrics for the new Slipknot album. In a new interview, Taylor reveals he's pretty far along.
Taylor was speaking to Billboard about the premiere of Stone Sour's new video, and towards the end of the interview, Billboard asked, point-blank, when we will hear new Slipknot. Taylor noted he's pretty far along writing lyrics.
The guys are writing tons of music and I've written lyrics to almost all of it and we're going to start trying to put together demos here and there with the time off that I have and really try to get ahead of the curve as far as what happens next.
M. Shaun "Clown" Crahan has said he and Jim Root are actively working on Slipknot songs and sending them to Corey Taylor via email. In past interviews, Clown noted there are 27 new song ideas floating and as of the the beginning of November, Clown claims the band have seven or eight songs completed.
Previously, Taylor has said Slipknot's new album will "absolutely arrive in 2019," but in this interview he backtracks those claims just a bit.
I know that we're gonna try and put an album out next year — however, that is all speculation. The best way to make God laugh is to announce your plans out loud. So I'm just going with the flow. The plan right now is next year but that is a huge plan because we still haven’t narrowed anything down, so we will definitely see what happens.
It seems like Taylor is being cautious to not promise on something the band can't deliver. Ultimately, I'm sure Slipknot's maggots want to make sure the band take all the time they need to assure the top quality they've come to expect from the band.
Meanwhile, Clown is set to make his solo debut in June at the Montebello Rock Festival. It'll be interesting to see what music he performs and if there's even the slightest chance that he teases new Slipknot, we'll be sure to write about it.
