The key buzzword for SXSW 2015 is retrenchment. Following an escalating period of peaking drama and crowd management issues over the past few years, the final straw came in 2014 when Rashad Owens – an aspiring rapper from Killeen, TX – killed four people and injured 21 others when he plowed through a crowd gathered outside the X show at Mohawk attempting to drunkenly evade a police stop.
While the SXSW organizers were found not responsible, the tragedy seemed a fitting end cap to mounting concerns in recent years that the crowds that flocked to the downtown Austin area every March were getting far too out of hand. While largely unspoken, there seemed to be a sense that such an event was almost inevitable given the increasing tensions of boxing in more and more rowdy revelers into a few square miles every year. Legal liability aside, maybe it was time for SXSW to deliberately and methodically scale back.
The City of Austin listened: event permits have been reduced this year by 25%, Dorito's and iTunes among other big name sponsors are out, the ever-popular Fader Fort will be invite only, police presence will be ramped up and curfews for outdoor events will be less onerous than in previous years (brick-and-mortar club shows are not effected unless they're within 600 feet of a residential property).
What this means for metalheads: probably not much in the long run. There was already a sharp dip in the number of 2014 metal showcases compared to recent years (although one could argue that the last 5-7 years had been kind of a fluke anyway, heavy metal never historically having had a strong presence at the festival in the 90s or early 00s). 2015 merely sees a continuation of that belt tightening, not necessarily a further slashing of heavy bookings. While some will decry these developments as a sign that SXSW is "over", for many others – local Austinites especially – it's a welcome step back toward the old days, when shows were about the bands and not hawking products, when beer was still regular price and you could usually find an empty barstool to drink it from…
Keep in mind that the below is as accurate as possible at the time of publication. There are a few of the usual suspects that haven't announced anything yet (ie. Hoeks Death Metal Pizza), but it's unclear at this point whether they're just late on the draw or victims of the city's more restrictive permitting process.
