Scott Ian Confirms That METALLICA Almost Fired Lars Ulrich in the 80s

What would have been?

What would have been?

Man, Scott Ian was around Metallica a lot. He recently shared a story about the experience of witnessing Dave Mustaine being fired from the legendary thrash band and now he tells a tale of how the band almost booted their most prolific business man.

In a recent interview promoting his new book, with Colardo radio station 94.3 KILO, Scott talks about the time Metallica considered replacing their drummer:

“The story was that [Metallica] had made a plan that they were gonna make a change and get a new drummer. We were all kind of blown away by that, because it was the four of them. It was just, like, ‘Wow! Really?’ And they were, like, ‘Yeah. When we finish this tour, we’re gonna find a new drummer.’ What could I do, just as a guy that’s friends with all of them? That’s a bummer for Lars, that sucks, and at the same time, you hope that your friends can continue on and do what they want to do with themselves. Obviously history turned out differently for that band, and they went on to become one of arguably the biggest bands on the planet.”

Metal elitists for years have dreamed of a 'tallica with a more capable drummer. Lars, himself, makes it no secret that he isn't the most technically skilled, but without his business acumen, I feel the band wouldn't be where they are today.

Let's say the band did decide to replace him – who would make the perfect candidate to replace Lars at the time? Weigh in with your thoughts in the comments.

Scott Ian's new book, I'm The Man is out now. You can order it here.
