Black metal aficionados might remember Jonas Åkerlund as an early drummer of Bathory (before they even recorded anything, so that's like an elitist wet dream).Music video aficionados are quick to remember that name is assosiated with a lot of famous videos from the late 90s and beyond including Metallica's "Whiskey in the Jar," Madonna's "Ray of Light" and many other videos. Real estate aficionados might be hearing about him soon because the dude just bought a church!
Swedish newspaper Gaffa reports (via translation):
A classic Methodist Church in Stockholm has been sold … after 120 years in the Assembly’s ownership. [Its new] owners have a little darker past: video director and former drummer in the black metal band Bathory, Jonas Åkerlund. What he [plans for] the old church is as yet unknown, but the congregation does not seem [worried] that it will be about devil worship.
States Solveig Högberg, paster of Holy Trinity Parish in Aftonbladet: “It is a great sadness for us to have to sell our church. But it still feels good that it will be used for cultural activities and not to offices as some other buyers wanted.”
No word on if Jonas plans to convert the church into a giant rave and reenact his Prodigy video for "Smack My Bitch Up" but a fan can only dream.
