I was at a show the other night talking about old school metal bands, when Alex Haber at Heavy NewYork said the wildest thing to me; "Jim Carrey predicted metal core". I knew the exact video clip he was speaking about right away, as it's been passed around for years. I found the comment a little funny, before making the realization, "Damn, I think he's right".
As we know, melodic metalcore adopts influence from the output of the Gothenburg scene in the late 90's, but it wasn't until bands like Killswitch Engage, Unearth, and ShadowsFall out of the Massachusetts area breathed life into a new formula that saw the intensity of bands like At The Gates with the delicacies of actual singing. We've come to know this as "god cop bad cop" style vocals made popular by the scene.
Now, if you take a closer look at this famous Jim Carrey interview from the early 90's where he talks about Napalm Death on The Aresenio Hall show, it really becomes a shocking revelation. Jim Carrey indeed predicts the MA metal core scene years before it began!
