The future of Van Halen isn't looking great. In an interview with WRIF "Meltdown" in September, vocalist David Lee Roth said "I think Van Halen's finished and this is the next phase" in reference to his Las Vegas residency. Roth added "I've inherited the band de facto — whatever that means. I think it means if you inherit it, carry this proudly. Van Halen isn't gonna be coming back in the fashion that you know. And that being said, Eddie's [Van Halen] got his own story to tell. [It's] not mine to tell it."
Now Toto guitarist Steve Lukather tells Eddie Trunk in a new podcast episode that Van Halen might be on hiatus due to health issues.
"[Eddie] and Alex are sitting there laying back and they're waiting to see what happens next. I think they're on a hiatus. There's been some health issues that they're dealing with and stuff like that. We're older guys now, and to go on the road, and stuff like that, it requires a lot of extra effort in terms of as a human being…I'm not the guy to say anything. I love those brothers so much and we've always had a great relationship. I'm a big fan and also adore them as human beings."
A few years ago, Roth seemed to insinuate a Van Halen reunion tour with Michael Anthony was in the works, with the band hoping to book Yankee Stadium, but those plans did not come to fruition. It seems like Van Halen might be off the table for a little while longer, though we've never received any word from the Van Halen family themselves. So who really knows.
