Metallica fans, and metal fans in general, will always remember the late and great bassist Cliff Burton. Now one fan is starting up a petition to make February 10 the official Cliff Burton Day in his hometown of Castro Valley, California, and it's gaining some serious traction. The petition itself has roughly 2,300 of the needed 2,500 signatures, though the Castro Valley Municipal Advisory Council (MAC) is also on board with memorializing Burton's birthday.
According to CBS News, The MAC Board voted 7 to 0 in favor of Cliff Burton Day on February 10, and now the potential holiday rests in the hands of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors' vote on February 6. Burton's old bass instructor Steve Doherty also spoke highly of a young Burton in the story, saying he was a terrific student.
"He always came prepared to his lesson. Terrific student that way. Especially for somebody that young," said Steve Doherty, music instructor … When people say 'Oh gosh, you taught Cliff Burton' it's always with mixed emotions for me because he had such a short life," said Doherty."
Here's hoping the Alameda County Board of Supervisors are on board with this too!
