A recent survey on FitRated looked to learn what genre of music most people work out to, and which artists within that genre are the most popular. Metalheads who hit the weights know that metal is the best to get folks pumped up, but how do the masses feel? Well, turns out 24% of people that voted agree with us.

Here is the breakdown of the six most popular genres of workout music?

  1. Pop 53.4%
  2. Hip-Hop/Rap 48.6%
  3. Classic Rock 46.3%
  4. Alternative 30.4%
  5. Electronic Dance Music 29.2%
  6. Heavy Metal 24.0%

Of the over 1,000 people surveyed, Youtube was the most popular way to listen to work out music. Also, Lady Gaga was the most popular artist, and it turned out that people who listen to rap/hip hop had the most intense workouts, but the article doesn't explain how it reached that metric. But, here is where heavy metal shined:

The fastest mile times, however, came from the heavy metal fans. These listeners were the most likely to run a sub-seven-minute mile, although they tended to prefer weightlifting to running. As opposed to this seven-minute burst, the longest average workouts were clocked by punk rock listeners. Their sweat sessions lasted 53 minutes –longer than any other genre’s fan base.

The survey lists Metallica, KISS and Slipknot as the three most popular metal artists to work out to.
