KITTIE's MERCEDES LANDER Talks Unused Fire Songs & Upcoming Surprises For Old-School Fans

It's a good time to get back into Kittie.

Kittie just released their first new record in 13 years Fire and they're showing no signs of slowing down. According to Kittie drummer Mercedes Lander in an interview with the BREWtally Speaking podcast, Fire originally had 16 songs ready to go that the band had to pare down to 10.

"There's so many songs that I like on this record. We picked 10 out of the 16 or so that we wrote," said Lander. "And I think that was the hardest part of this experience, was only picking 10 songs… It's so hard because I personally think that they're all so good, but I'm clearly biased. I think they're all great.

"And it was really hard to make that decision to pick those songs, so much so that we [said to producer Nick Raskulinecz], like, 'Nick, what do we do?' And he was, like, well, 'If it were me, let's pick these songs.' And we were, like, 'Okay, you know what? Let's just do it.' 'Cause we couldn't make a decision."

So what's to become of those six songs? Well, nothing yet… but Lander adds that Kittie is planning on possibly reworking them and putting them on the next record! That, and they've got some surprises coming up for old-school fans that she can't talk about just yet. So overall it's a pretty exciting time to be a Kittie fan.

"So right now there are other things that are going to happen that I think that some older Kittie fans are gonna be really excited about. So there's some things coming down the pipe that will be, I think, really exciting for everyone involved. So you're just gonna have to wait to see what happens. Unfortunately, I can't talk more about it. But other than that, I think we're probably gonna go back and take those six songs that we didn't record and maybe rework them and then maybe we'll put 'em on the next record."

Kittie will play five exclusive North American shows this month and next month and August, celebrating Fire alongside some classics and some not-often-played deep cuts. The shows feature a variety of openers, and you can get your tickets right here.

"We are absolutely thrilled to be headlining a handful of exclusive shows this summer in support of our forthcoming album," said Kittie of the shows. "Expect a celebration of new and old material alike, spanning our 25 year career thus far. We are looking forward to playing some set list staples and bringing back some songs that we haven't played live in decades! Although limited, look for more shows to be announced at a later date. We've missed you and we can't wait to see you again!"
