The Lords Of Chaos film, based off the 1998 black metal history book Lords Of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground written by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Søderlind, is currently in production. It's oddly been described as Trainspotting for the millennial generation. Darkthrone's Fenriz is vehemently against the film being made, and Mayhem's bassist Necrobutcher said in 2015 that he would do anything to stop the film being made.
In an excellent new interview with Rolling Stone surrounding Mayhem's upcoming tour playing their landmark album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, the band elaborated on their problems with the film, namely that the band was never contacted about it:
"They contacted everybody behind our backs, our crew members, all kinds of people associated with us in a very sneaky way," [Necrobutcher] says. "It's the wrong approach. You make a movie of a band? The first people I would contact would be the band and ask for permission to use their music. Don't come afterwards because we won't authorize it."
"I think all that know Norwegian black metal well know that the book was crap, and we are all skeptical and negative about it being made into a film," Ruch says.
Vocalist Attila Csihar added he was unsettled by Metallica's music video for ManUNkind, and likened it to if Mayhem made a music video with an actor portraying Cliff Burton in it. He added he still respected the band. "The film is a bit controversial for me, because it's a movie based on our story," he says. "Like, what the fuck?"
Footage recently surface of the shoot in Norway. No word on a release date, but a movie poster was recently unveiled on the movie's IMDB page.
