Daniel Cordova's Picks (So Far)
Boris – Noise
Boris has been putting out their own brand of weird stoner/doom that really speaks to me. This album is exactly what I've loved about the past few releases- heavy, catchy, and unique. They're slowly becoming one of my favorite bands.
Wild Throne – Blood Maker
Very few bands come along where I can't say I've heard anything like them before. Wild Throne is one of those bands. They blend epic stoner rock with progressive metal chaos. It's a shame this is only an EP. More, dammit! MORE!
Helms Alee – Sleepwalking Sailors
Seattle's three-headed sludge beauty/beast has struck gold on their third album. Their three-vocalist approach adds an extremely interesting dynamic to their already varied music.
So Hideous – Last Poem / First Light
There are a lot of bands out now doing this whole shoegaze black metal thing, but So Hideous cut all the excess fat. This band takes what works for this genre in terms of darkness, atmosphere, and epicness then produces shorter, and often better, songs than the current front-runners.
Casualties of Cool – Casualties of Cool
Devin Townsend's take on country music is unlike anything the genre has ever heard before. There a little twang here and there but the majority of the sound is a continuation of what was established on Ki and Ghost. The addition of Ché Aimee Dorval even adds more of an ethereal beauty to this record.
