Lordi Plays Lordi
The monster-themed metal band Lordi is known for their creature-feature theatrics. Wearing costumes that resemble heavy metal album art, Lordi look like they walked out of a horror movie. In Dark Floors, they actually walked into one.
While the average American may think of them as a KISS clones with better make up, Lordi is a huge deal in their home country of Finland. They have their own brand of soda, they've appeared on national postage stamps, and even political candidates have used pictures of them in campaigns. The group's leader, Mr. Lordi, has a background in moviemaking and costume design. When he wanted to make a horror film, he was handed the largest budget in the history of Finnish filmmaking. Thus, Dark Floors is essentially the equivalent of Avatar in Finland.
The movie is about a group of visitors at a mental hospital who unexpectedly end up in a dark parallel dimension and get tormented by monsters as they try and escape. And the monsters doing the tormenting? It’s just Lordi playing themselves. Dark Floors serves as a showcase for the rather ridiculous living metal monsters.
