BALMOG – Pillars of Salt
You'd expect an 18 minute track to be of Sleep-inducing influence, but Spain's Balmog are expansive, psychedelic black metal to the core. A lurching, wild ride of gradual pile-up strings, atmospheres, textures. Despite the length, a colorful and compelling piece of music.
CIRITH UNGOL – Before Tomorrow
Another teaser from the forthcoming 'Forever Black' LP (out on Metal Blade April 24th, first album in 29 years!). A band full of heavy history CI are carrying on the torch and still very much pumped up with the spirit of exhilaration, fantasy and anthemic charge. Jarvis Leatherby of Night Demon, now well-entrenched in the legions of Cirith Ungol (and producer of their Frost and Fire fest in So. Cal) sits the sidelines out during the abrupt tour halt in a productive way indeed: there will be a full Cirith Ungol retrospective with Jarvis plowing through and talking up the band's prime cuts on Gimme, May 1st!

Total Hells Headbangers-style chaos from Angelcorpse alumni fronted by Black Witchery vocalist Impurath. Complex death metal acrobatics accented by furious shred and up-front raw production.
XIBALBA – En La Oscuridad
With a new LP on Southern Lord May 29th, these grime purveyors continue their So-Cal-bleached amalgamation of death metal and HC with a pure downer vibe to make up one big ball of confusion. They sound full of vim and vigor after a three year break for sure.
ARMAGEDDON – Buzzard
A little side trail of prog/proto-metal to celebrate our Prog To the Edge special 4/7 with host Roie Avin. Keith Relf's (Yardbirds/Renaissance) 1975 smoker with members of Captain Beyond and Steamhammer. Despite A&M heft behind it, not a big seller, and Relf died of electrocution while guitar playing tragically after this. But this track is a stunner, total blitz of guitar and frenetic rhythms, nuclear energy.
