VOIVOD, BUÑUEL Among Gimme Metal's Top Tracks of The Week

voivod

Gimme Metal Program Director Brian Turner delivers the week's top 5 office buzz-worthy tracks.

VOIVOD – Planet Eaters

A fan remarked that Voivod's sci-fi of the 80s has become the reality of the '20's and that may very well be the case, yet this crew continue to stay a conceptual step ahead of us all. They do however give a nod to the nostalgia of the '90's with this animated video created by Pierre Menetrier, who did a fan video for "Nothingface" on an early 90's Amiga computer and caught Voivod's attention and commission for this one. Psyched as always for the next LP to ensue.

BUÑUEL – When God Used a Rope

A new collaboration between some avant-metal Italians (guitarist Xabier Iriondo (Afterhours), bassist Andrea Lombardini, and drummer Francesco Valente (Il Teatro Degli Orrori, Snare Drum Exorcism, and Lume)) fronted by the inimitable Eugene Robinson of San Francisco's Oxbow. His physical, simmering/exploding persona has a keen fit for the elasticity and experimental quality of this music, not unlike the filmmaker who provides their name itself.

MORDOM – Narcosis

This San Diego unit heaps a generous stew of death, doom and black metal stylings onto our unsuspecting ears, a curious and hard-to-peg formula, but one of unmistakably downer sonic outcome akin to the cave-shroud misery that is Abruptum. Imagine your turntable set on 16 RPM buried in dirt, give a look at the lineup's roles (Kian Abulhosn – Tumultuous Poundings and Subterranean Blasts (Perpetual Pulsing from the Abyss), Dan Rot – Abhorrent Deprivation and Repulsive Amalgamation of Rubble (Roaring Echoes from the Void), Max Hoffman – Desolate Wails of Desperation and Horror (Departures from Reality), Dane Mansfield – Rhythm Guitar) and your mind is somewhat set for the experience. Perhaps.

KROLOK – Unveiled Subterranean Treasures

Gnashing and crashing black metal of olden variety, clawing its way out of a paper bag and into your ugly soul. I swear the cheesy toms sound like The Fall's 'Dragnet' LP. It's a visit to the past from a bleak future, complete with the sonic roadmap for the journey.

BLACK CILICE – Returning From Dimensions Below

The oft-discussed mysterious black metal troupe from Portugal are back, and this new track sizzles with blownout levels, bone-shearing riffs and more unfathomable production choices that make them certainly one of the most unique and exciting bands in the post-black metal scene. Always puzzling, yet always challenging themselves.
