Gimme Metal's Top Tracks of the Week

ULVER, BIG BUSINESS, VULTURE'S VENGEANCE Among The Top Tracks of the Week

Ulver

Every week, Gimme Radio Program Director, Brian Turner, delivers the top 5 jaw-dropping tracks on Gimme Radio.

Culled from the week’s past shows, these tracks have the Gimme Radio DJs' seal of approval, have the listeners demanding more and the Gimme office buzzing.

VULTURE'S VENGEANCE – The Knightlore

Lots of growling about the epic vocalist's performance allocated to the backyard in the mix. But this is some blazing contemporary Italian NWOBHM fire we heard courtesy of Allan Horrox's By This Way I Rule! radio extravaganza.

BIG BUSINESS – Heal the Weak

Ex-Karp and Murder City Devils duo, absorbed into Melvins, then checking out things as a big band of Big Business, then back to a duo, where they remain on their recently released The Beast You Are. They still manage to orchestrate a universe of heavy sound in minimal form, speedy Sabbathisms and psychedelic flourishes.

RINGWORM – Acquiesce

A strident and self-assured direction on this one. After 30 years, these Cleveland throttlers know exactly how to pace their attack, each syllable resonates with swagger, clear production and a synchronicity with the pendulous metal/hardcore guitar lines swinging around. Short and simple.

ULVER – Blood, Fire, Woods

The highly anticipated Drone Activity (and US tour dates) documented a live performance at at a Norwegian festival of the same name. Murky, half-improvised shapes and movements are what Ulver does best, whereas they seize the atmosphere of the room and translate it into their own definition. Far from monotonous, very far from what the standardized vibe for a 'metal' band is, yet remaining well within its parameters.

MAGGOT TWAT – I Fucked A Train

I suppose if 8-bit metal needed its own Anal Cunt, you could do a lot worse than these guys. The trio of Dick Pancakes, Pizza Manwhat and Spam Manwhat (guessing they're brothers) make up their puerility factor with gawdshonest crushing beats and spasmotic vocal performance that dresses to impress. There actually seems to be a guitar vs. train sound element to this track so that's not a letdown either. The CD remastered also is said to have a hidden funk track called "James Brown Ointment."
