TOMBS – Monarchy of Shadows
Pleased to see Gimme's Metal Matters podcast maestro Mike Hill shredding up a storm on the next phase of Tombs' illustrious career, which finds them with a new release 'Monarchy of Shadows' EP out February 28th on Season Of Mist. Locked in with a new lineup, I gotta say the ferocity level is up a notch since 'The Grand Annihilation', which was also a leveller. Looking forward to hearing the rest (and a band Gimme DJ special coming up around release time too.)
OATH OF CRUELTY – Summary Execution at Dawn
Houston trio on Dark Descent bust outta the gates with relentless death/thrash pummel true to the blueprint. Shards of hard riffage, speed and destruction working in tandem with little respite.
WORMHOLE – The Weakest Among Us
Can TechSlam be precise yet stumbling and fucked up? Apparently this Baltimore quintet makes that the case. Despite blastbeats and hyper-precision, the bass ambles around like it's drunk looking for the outhouse at monster truck rally somewhere, the guitar floats in between looking for a place to roost, while gargled vocals sound undoubtedly depressive. A general grey cloud hovers all over this thing, yet it kicks ass in the most directional-yet-aimless way possible. Are we making sense?
MORTIIS – A Dark Horizon
The ex-Emperor entity known as Mortiis is back and reminds us that he is the Godfather of Dungeon Synth the way James Brown is the Godfather of Soul.
This is a singular artist dwelling in a unique state of mind and expression. He recently admitted in print that his Skype handle is named after Larry David late-sidekick Marty Funkhouser. This is a man that knows the eternal depths of the dark soul.
SEKH – Deus Sive Machina
Whoa, the Spanish duo of MS and AT have plum-procreated some wacked hybrid of industrial and black metal complete with a backline of sounds so otherworldly/ghostlike in a way that you're not exactly sure what is going on. Leviathan comparisons not that far off. This is splattered yet refined music, overwhelming, yet submissive simultaneously.
