SKEPTICISM, TOL MORWEN Among Gimme Metal's Top Tracks of the Week

skepticism_2021

Gimme Metal Program Director Brian Turner delivers the week's top 5 office buzz-worthy tracks.

SKEPTICISM – The Swan and the Raven

A brilliantly evocative video from a true master unit of modern funereal doom. The return of Skepticism continues an upward trajectory of consistent downer plod elevated by gargantuan synths layered into a tower of tumultuous tones. Swirling steps upward to a most excellent crescendo finale here.

TOL MORWEN – Terror Of Rome

Scandinavian-style death from Italy with Viking lore hanging overhead? Hell yes. Depicting a Catheginian warlord's tale from 200 BC, "Terror Of Rome" grandly depicts the images of swords a-swinging, epic vibes of conquering with daunting solos flanking the death growls. Pretty amazing band.

DEVIANT PROCESS – The Hammer of Dogma

Jean-Daniel Villeneuve's one man symphonic death project Psychic Pain was the root of this Canadian project, expanded into a full force tech-death unit with some multi-genre overflow crammed into their massive attack. At the height of blastbeat mayhem a switch flips into jazzy, soulful grooves, piled on passages and structures that know no boundary. Between this and the forthcoming Archspire, Season of Mist is pulling out all the stops this late summer on the delivery of some dense sounds and wildly-swerving stylists.

CHERUBS – Lazy Snakes (Skrewd Version)

When Cherubs barnacled along the underbelly of Texas noise/sludge along with fellow travelers Stickmen With Rayguns, Butthole Surfers etc. it certainly seemed a locked in time and place, but their return over the last decade has shown the band to be sharper and more innovative than ever. Following up a 2019 LP we have the new 'SLO BLO 4 FRNZ & SXY' EP on Relapse, showing them to be as rambunctuously psychedelic and queasy as ever, garnished with throttling drum action and thick fuzzified soul for your sludge.

CHROME WAVES – Sometimes

With a pedrigree linked to the likes of Nachtmystium and Skeletonwitch, Chrome Waves return for a third LP round and injecting even more generous helpings of MBV/Slowdive style pedalgaze into their post-black metal DNA. Emotional delivery remains front and center, certainly taking cues from sounds built in their past and steadily seizing their new direction with vigor. 'The Rain Will Cleanse' is out on September 10 via Transceding/Disorder, and we're thrilled to have a return visit to Gimme's DJ booth here on September 27th.
