Ripped To Shreds

Gimme Metal Program Director Brian Turner delivers the week's top 5 office buzz-worthy tracks.

Acephalix – "Godheads"

These Bay Area denizens have been around as long as the crust on the seats on the #6 bus in the Mission, coming back to life after a five year break (they played a Gimme party in SF in fact, and Dave Benson used to DJ for us!). The slumber is possibly due to singer Daniel Butler's double time in Vastum, but regardless they are here and "Godheads" unleashes a thundering intro and a wall-dripping onslaught of deathly grind pummel we know and love them so well for. The band's Theothanatology LP hits in September and of course we have them by to spin October 14th!

Ripped To Shreds – "Reek of Burning Freedom"

Cavernous death from this Taiwanese American entry to the Relapse release roster from their forthcoming 劇變 (Jubian) LP (translation: "upheaval"), and a brainripping vocal mix up face to face with a relentless instrumental avalanche. Guest hosting Gimme on October 12th!

156/Silence – "Say the Phrase"

Pittsburgh's 156/Silence have veered from the usual Metalcore pack by tapping their exposed-raw-nerve sensibilities into whipped up frenzies that seem to progress more and more each outing. With Narrative (out September 2nd) the band infuses some more synths but also sharpens up the tone on their razor/HC-hybrid assault. Pregnant pauses as a weapon of tension, the eruptions highly creative and neck-snappingly good. The whole group picks out songs for a guest special on Gimme's new Core channel (Metal 3) August 31st at 10am PT/1pm ET so tune in!

Fucked Up – "Strix"

Canada's Fucked Up continue their evolution with one of their doomier outings ever here, from their forthcoming Oberon EP release in October. Hardcore by nature, they've never been peggable really (there's a Saint-Saens cover on this EP!) sucking in every influence in their universe and turning it into a boiling cauldron over overloaded sound. Definitely some detectable downtuned sludge ringing through "Strix" for sure.

Behemoth – "The Deathless Sun"

The few fleeting glimpses of these Polish extremists' forthcoming Opvs Contra Natvram (out September 16th on Nuclear Blast) have somewhat prepared us for their return, but this track is exceptionally heady, packing oblique images, epic chorus, dual guitar flights all representative of the sound of Behemoth but somehow surging its tide into a whole new zone. We are very excited to announce Nergal has no less than FOUR upcoming guest DJ takeovers on Gimme starting Fridays 12pm PT/3pm ET starting September 9th and running for the next weeks. Lots of his favorites, lots of talk with our Jim Santanella and a very big blowout experience for us! Mark your calendar!
