NECROT, JESUS WEPT Among Gimme's Top Tracks of the Week

necrot

Gimme Metal Program Director Brian Turner delivers the week's top 5 office buzz-worthy tracks.

NECROT – Your Hell

After three preview singles (this being the latest), Necrot finally arrive this week with the full length 'Mortal', highly anticipated after the pure greatness that was 2017's 'Blood Offerings'. Luca Indrio said himself that the goal of this was to make a long-lasting pure classic death metal record to be remembered, and certainly, 'Mortal' one-ups everything for the band. Denser, full of more subtleties, while remaining wildly aggressive and cramming so much richness into 4-5 minutes that each track stands out as a condensed nugget of advanced ideas you can draw from more each listen. Friday the 28th Gimme celebrates the release date with some LP giveaways via Tankcrimes, and a reprise of all three members' individual summer specials in a marathon 12-6pm PT/3-9pm ET guest DJ bonfire.

THOU – Fourth of July

A somewhat severe metamorphosis of the Soundgarden classic threatening to crush itself under titanic weight. While the initial vocals keep intact the pure melody they're in constant threat of being swept up in a sea of distortion, in a good way. A second, more tortured voice joins in but the space maintained in the song remains minimalist and super effective. Halfway through screeching guitars puncture a whole through everything, but quickly resolves back into its doomy, crackled-feedback finale.

JESUS WEPT – Comfortably Dumb

Originally meant for a split release that never developed, this Detroit-based death combo are having a blast: tearing it up Carcass style, covering W.A.S.P. on their new album too (which also has a track bragging "recorded not live at Donington". Great stuff on the continually-interesting Redefining Darkness label.

ATRAMENTUS – Stygian

Perhaps the album to usher in winter with, Atramentus' latest on 20 Buck Spin takes a sloth-like crawl through funeral doom-worshipping corridors. Atmospheric, dabbling in some black metal aesthetic, the whole impetus of this album is to suspend the listener in a cocoon of hopelessness, and succeeds rather well.

BURIED REALM – In the Shallow Light

Colorado's Josh Dummer has manned the deck for his one-man Buried Realm project for some time, a super-schizo melodic death project to say the least, His last LP did find a plethora of guest artists and the latest 'Embodiment of the Divine' also reaches into the rolodex, with guests from Scar Symmetry, Mors Principium Est, and Chaos For the Masses. Brutal industrial crush gives way to sweeping synth breakdowns and soaring vocals and back again.
