ICEBURN, CARNIFEX Among Gimme Metal's Top Tracks of the Week

Gimme Metal Program Director Brian Turner delivers the week's top 5 office buzz-worthy tracks.

ICEBURN – Dahlia Rides the Firebird

As the expansive Iceburn Collective, these guys went on to be the round peg in the square hole of the metal/hardcore scene, confusing many a Shelter fan on their 90's Revelation run with their mathy, freewheeling jazz structures (congas! Horns!) before disbanding around the millenium and returning as Iceburn. Many ears are attuned to what evolution transpired in the 21 years since we've heard from them last, and now with 'Asclepius' emerging on Southern Lord we see a return. Their all-encompassing musical worldview continues, with even new genres plumbed. James Holder's guitar is especially crushing here, excited to hear the full-length.

CARNIFEX – Pray For Peace

A collision of squelchy deathcore flanked with opulent organs, this San Diego combo have cemented quite a name for themselves through time and return full throttle with this track, and a bonafide tour kicking off in July.

MASTIFF – Endless

The Hull UK outfit deal in blackened sludge/HC surrounding themselves with walls of noise which never fully obliterates their drive for a certain melodicism, a unique and interesting combination. A finely sculpted mess of fury, well crafted in studio and certainly amazing live. There are definitely some varied corners this band pulls its identity from, and we'll get a taste of their influences when they guest DJ on Gimme July 7th.

SKEPTICISM – Calla

The grandiose veneer on this new track from these 30-year-enduring masters of funereal doom is almost Queen-like in the brightness in comparison to past works. Skepticism is back once again, shining bright with heavy organ and atmosphere, but charges into a new light with greatness and glory. Looking forward to 'Companion' out in September on Svart.

WANDERER – Marionette

Following up EPs and split releases, Wanderer come into their own with 'Liberation From a Brutalist Existence', a pulverizing exercise in jarring dissonance and heavy-as-hell rhythmic plod. Reminiscent of some of the 90's/00's noise-rock purveyors, the rattling attack goes well with Converge, Unsane nods amped up by some scary vocals and high end buzzing-bee guitar touches on the fringe. Cool stuff.
