Gimme Metal Program Director Brian Turner delivers the week's top 5 office buzz-worthy tracks.
MÖRK GRYNING – Infernal
With Hinsides Vrede being the first release in 15 years, the black metal legacy this band is saddled with is curious and unusual in its reappearance. Galloping rhythms and crisp riffology coupled with soaring, melodic guitar lines show a drive to evolve in sound. The purveying doom still cloaks over the environs, but here's some tried and true black metal lifers stretching into interesting directions not mired in past expectations.
PHARAOH OVERLORD – Without Song All Will Perish
This always-unpredictable offshoot of the otherwise unpredictable Finnish band Circle seems to have consolidated Ektro labelhead Jussi Lehtisahlo's recent fixation with peppy, business-core sales-meetings-of-the-80s' synth evocations (perhaps this is the most evil music of all? The soundtrack of capitalism blanketed in fuzzy 80's synth nostalgia?). Regardless, the busy Krautrock and Italo-soundtrack influences that have dripped in here get a severe jolt when Aaron Turner (Old Man Gloom, SUMAC, etc) drops his deathly vocal charge into the mix. A pretty amazing mix of disparate elements and perfect for your next business Zoom meeting background.
FACELESS BURIAL – Ravished To the Unknown
While remaining technical and precise in their exhumation of 90's death metal tricks, Australia's Faceless Burial slop it up a bit in a most excellent way. Gutwrenching blasts of dissonant guitar attack, well-formulated song structures, great lyrics all sum up this new Dark Descent release, with extra hosannas for a very organic and analogue approach to the recording.
GREYHAWK – Keepers of the Flame
More classic metal regenerations from this Seattle-based unit founded by New York/Canada/Italy-originating members. With a vocalist who spent time in the Seattle Opera, these guys go for the glory, epically blasting heavily over valleys of ice warriors, flaming swords, frost and more fire. 'Keepers of the Flame' has been out since the summer, but will be the soundtrack to your wintery hibernation.
HJELVIK – North Tsar
The first music of Kvelertak singer and co-founder Erlend Hjelvik since splitting ranks with them in 2018. It's an odyssey of Viking lore and blackened/classic heavy metal, all showcasing on the Welcome To Hel LP Nuclear Blast will release on November 20th. The LP promises guest appearances from Matt Pike and Mike from Slough Feg, and keep ears peeled for a guest Gimme takeover by Erlend in the months ahead!
