Deathhammer – "Thrown To the Abyss"
From their latest Hells Headbangers release Electric Warfare, the amazing Norwegian duo Deathhammer (with one half relocated to Australia) fire up the guns on some blistering blackened thrash traversing genres (with a few vocal "Frost and Fire" whoops thrown in for good measure). True to their roots, Sargent Salsten and Sadomancer couple to emit an evil hiss and buzz over the room and evoke some classic vibes while keeping it progressively now.
Falls Of Rauros – "Poverty Hymn"
Euro-folk black metal from Maine? Yes, Falls of Rauros continue their tradition of wedding many disparate elements seamlessly on their latest Key To a Vanishing Future (Gilead Media). Since growing in membership, Falls of Rauros have also added increasingly rich textures and structures into their approach: strident melodic sensibilities over dark tapestries and grim vocals front and center, flanked by colorful layers of sound exploration, lyrically spotlighting dedication and affirmation of life through strife. Abraham – "Verminvisible"
Swiss band Abraham's churn is speckled with post-rock spindle and shifting time structures amidst a gutpunching thud and Swans/Jesus Lizard-like plod. Woozy chord structures tumble in a queasy orbit while ornate guitar figures circle like an air-raid siren, minimal and effective basslines punching through quiet passages of feedback and tension before it all rises again.
