GRUESOME – A Mind Decayed
'Twisted Horror' out on 10"/CD/digital on Relapse June 5th and it's a split between Matt Harvey's two hospital dumpster-diving projects Gruesome and Exhumed. Still creeping on the OG death metal vein, Gruesome dice it up well on this one. Matt's got a Gimme DJ special to help promote the release Friday, May 22nd, and his sets are traditionally bloody and awesome.
CALLIGRAM – Kenosis
Ripping and pummeling D-Beat inflected insanity with Italian-language throatshred, Calligram (who actually hail from four countries) display a tapestry of metal and hardcore influences, flipping channels with ease throughout the course of one song, coarsing through dramatic interludes. 'The Eye Is the First Circle' out April 10 on Prosthetic.
CZERŃ'- Widmo
Prime Polish sludge with some elements of black and death metal deep in the cracks, the quartet makes for some dark plod that busts out into flurries of chaos all beneath the gutteral growl of Łukasz Zając. A broad plate of sounds, surging riffs, unexpected directions and dynamics.
tētēma – Wait Til Morning
A new Mike Patton project finds him working with Australian artist Anthony Panteras who has done a lot more electroacoustic and experimental/textural sounds than metal. The result? A very strange hybrid of dark riffage, static eruptions, jungle dub, tribal chants, and general form disruption. A more dystopian Mr Bungle perhaps, but definitely some darkly observations on a borderless future as reflected in the multi-genre-swing format of this duo's work.
ALLEGAEON – Roundabout
Not a huge surprise that the grandpa of prog bands gets the treatment from this crew.
Not to say Allegaeon have been obviously worshipping at the altar of Yes, but their penchant for some hyper technical antics certainly helps them get their arms around this with ease. We'll see if Greg Burgess whips out some more Yes originals in his forthcoming Gimme guest DJ spot!
