Gimme Metal Program Director Brian Turner delivers the week's top 5 office buzz-worthy tracks.
EINHERJER – The Blood and the Iron
Crammed with Viking imagery in this clip, the mighty return of Einherjer finds them in amazing form, and back on their original imprint Napalm after 25 years with their latest 'North Star'. Hook-laden to say the least yet completely pummeling, we're psyched to have them guest DJ on Gimme March 3rd.
REGIONAL JUSTICE CENTER – Conquest
RJC is a full band project of LA-via Seattle's Ian Shelton, and this is a snarling blast of post-HC/power violence/metal hybridization that rattles like a loose (electrified) chain fence. Shotgun riffs, relentless distorto-drums, real heft despite brevity of tracks.
HOOFMARK – Anguished Demon Blues
After blanketing you in the intro with an acrid layer of black fuzz, this one explodes into total mayhem. With this trackname and the LP 'Evil Blues' (out right now on Miasma of Barbarity) we continue to see the weird genre-blurs our Portuguese metalheads throw at the world. It's blues in a pure essence of invoking a total downer, it also ties to the structure of said genre in the most outlier way possible while maintaining its essence. But for the most part this is a pure black metal thrasher. Oh, and Gimme's 'Satan Made Me Do It' monthly Saturday co-host Nuno is behind this sickness to boot.
SUMMONING THE LICH – Cult of the Ophidian
More melodic death from this crew, and apparently the first of a trilogy of LPs from this Missouri quartet, now on Prosthetic. Despite the hyper-technical dazzle, STL puts pure emotion front and center, unleashing chaotic scrabbling and precision as the tool to elevate the overall somberness and deep dark passion that purveys these recordings. Pungent blends of black metal also infiltrate lyrical tones of fantasy and flight. An real amalgamation of styles and loveletter from true metal archaeologists.
ABIOTIC – Souvenir of Skin
Stunning animation in this clip that previewed the now-out 'Ikigai' LP from Abiotic, flanked by many friends during this pandemic production, including Trevor Strnad who appears here. Tech-death, Strnad's screams over the low end pummel of this track, crazed brutality abounds and thankfully the year did not keep these guys from putting their best effort into this monster LP.
