Gimme Metal Program Director Brian Turner delivers the week's top 5 office buzz-worthy tracks.
DUMA – Cannis
This Nairobi duo of Martin Kanja and Sam Karugu's debut LP was a Gimme fave last year! An unrelenting, mysterious hybrid of industrial rattle, black metal atmosphere, electronic abstraction, utilizing blasts of dystopian techno, processed congas, monolithic guitar all stewed into a madass blender of hyper-paranoia. They've landed a Sub Pop single rife with two more doses of this greatness. One of the truly innovative units going these days.
INGESTED – This Disgusting Revelation
While some bands used lockdown to align new material, death kings Ingested chose to refocus and reimagine their 2011 'The Surreption' LP with a newly arranged sheen. This new take of "This Disgusting Revelation" finetunes some sharp edges and makes for what seems to be a fond reflection of a time and place for the band, but merely taking it to new plateaus. The LP (cleverly entitled 'The Surreption II' is out July 30th on Unique Leader, and the band celebrates with us at Gimme with a guest DJ takeover on July 28th.
KING WOMAN – Psychic Wound
Much akin to the snaky, writhing closeup images to the accompanying video, King Woman's music blurs beauty and horror with equal aplumb. Sinewy guitar lines and enveloping atmospheres morph into in-the-red screams and formidable tension under the guidance of central songwriter/vocalist Kris Esfandiari, a colorful palette of instrumentation, emotions and sprawling composition all accenting what is essentially some high end doom here. 'Celestial Blues' is out on Relapse July 30.
SPEAR OF TEUTA – Scorn
Brooding sonic lo-fi damnation from a Croatian named Krik, Spear of Teuta's is deeply influenced by darkly 80s postpunk for sure. Listen close and while the guitars are definitely down in the dungeon, there's some chiming Killing Joke/Magazine moves in there caked over with a pile of sod. I like the positive-vibed propulsiveness going head to head with the complete misery of what's emimating from Krik's brain and throat here, a really weird combination that works.
GOSUDAR – Morbid Despotic Ritual
This Moscow death combo wound up in the inbox this week calling themselves out as Incantation/Dead Congregation fans, and we liked what we heard plenty. No frills, low-tech production well complementing the gurgling growl with steady blizzards of instrumental attack that switches channels and does from doomcrawl to spiraling tornado at the click of a switch.
