Sonic Flower – "Swineherd"

Me and My Bellbottom Blues may evoke the decade of Jimmy Carter's weed-laced peanut farm well enough, but it's also the new one from the amazing Japanese combo Sonic Flower. Featuring ex-Church of Misery vocalist Tatsu Mikami and bassist Kazuhiro Asaeda (whose bass-holding stance is certainly legend in itself!), the return of the Flower is a momentous occasion after a great reissue a couple years back. Leafhound, Deep Purple-style thudding riffs abound caked by a more than generous splatter of head-bending/banging wah. Out now on Heavy Psych Sounds and available through Gimme Metal here.

Dead Cross – "Heart Reformer"

Mike Patton, Dave Lombardo, Justin Pearson, and Michael Crain are back with II, the latest from this all star crew, out October 28 on Ipecac. It's a fierce, politically-charged hardcore attack that arose from Crain's unfortunate illness diagnosis and his odyssey through treatment, and a testimony to perseverance and band-bonding during chaotic times. Frantic, brutal, and turning tempos on a dime, DC is in fine form and we hope Michael is too. In fact, he will be hosting a super-anticipated Gimme DJ special Wednesday October 26 at 12pm PT/3pm ET so get onboard! Get it here via Gimme Metal.

Therion – "Marijin Min Nar"

The gothic splendor of Therion unfolds majestically once again for us all: a grand choral intro, unfurling into thudding middle eastern guitar melodies, operatic backing vocals and another epic before our ears. Their inception days of death metal have slowly and assuredly evolved into symphonic greatness. These guys continually deliver decades down the line. Get it here via Gimme Metal.

Detheros – "Gruesome Tools of Torture"

Well, if anyone can romanticize surgery sans anesthesia, it's this Canadian crew. Detheros and their scalpel-sharp brand of death metal ready Unrelenting Malevolence and it hits all the right ugly spots. Churning, scabby vocals oversee an onslaught of suffocating riffs and flailing drums to hit their mark precisely.

Mythic Sunship – "Tempest"

Coltrane metal? Anaconda Rock? What is happening here? Simply put, Scandinavian prog is in full effect with these guys: faint whiffs of fusion-filled forests blow among heavy grooves. Saxophones inflect the mix, fire and brimstone stir in the dual light and darkness served up here. Latest LP Light/Flux is out now on Tee Pee, grab a gnome and light the bong.
