Gimme Metal Program Director Brian Turner delivers the week's top 5 office buzz-worthy tracks.
Cancer Bats – "Friday Night"
Back on the attack with Psychic Jailbreak, this Canadian HC crew have scaled back to a trio format and are none the loss. Frantic and fuzzified, the Cancer Bats' amped up Black Flag attack bloodies the pit once again, even drawing from Flag's stoned-in-the-van later era to implement some slow-mo sludge elements. Get it from Gimme Metal here.
Gevurah – "Blood-Soaked Kalibasis"
With Gehinnom their first release in four years, Gevurah offer no casual listening (or viewing) experience. Dense, charged with evil hiss and complex layers of malevolent sound, "Blood-Soaked Kalibasis" gives us a peek into this massive full length out right now on Profound Lore. Get it from Gimme Metal here.
Black Lava – "Soul Furnace"
Full of fury, Melbourne's Black Lava not only add blackened sounds to their death attack, but unmistakable prog moves making them quite a curious beast. Stop-start passages underline the hostile buzz and scarifying vocal assault of Rob Watkins (previously of Blackhelm), it's a relentless sizzle of pummeling proportions. Soul Furnace hits November 22 on Season Of Mist.
Oxbow & Peter Brotzmann – "The Valley"
20 years down the road Oxbow's sound is continually unpeggable: chaos and order, sublime and primal, observing human behavior at its most complex. A stunning experience on record and live. They're signed to Ipecac with their latest Love's Holiday due soon, in the meantime they've released an incredible live document on Sleeping Giant Glossolalia An Eternal Reminder of Not Today / Live at Moers joined by veteran German sax titan Peter Brotzmann. Brotzmann is among the heaviest of the heavies, and whatever air isn't sucked from the room by Eugene and company is clearly history with his added presence. We're honored to have vocalist Eugene Robinson and guitarist Niko Wenner in for a guest DJ special (Eugene joined us this last year with his other ensemble Buñuel). Tune in Wednesday October 26 at 1pm ET/10am PT.
Triskelyon – "Balance of Terror"
On their new Downfall release (Moribund), Canadian thrashers Triskelyon spool up some classic Overkill moves around Category VI axeman Geoff Wave, implementing a variety of male/female guest vocalists from kindred outfits Oberon, Hyperia, Category VI and Incidium. A blasted, wild ride throughout.
