Gimme Metal Program Director Brian Turner delivers the week's top 5 office buzz-worthy tracks.

SKELETON – The Sword

These Austinites follow the grimy path of Venom, Amebix and their ilk by fusing the metal grind with punk ferocity. And like those bands, the attack careens around like a nut swinging a machete with little regard for what's in its space not keeping it tidy: fractured speed riffs, troglodyte drumming, the whole deal. A featured album in Gimme's shop right now, and a fave wreckin' up the netwaves on our playlists as we speak.

DROUTH – A Drowning In Sunlight

The Pac-NW band Contempt eventually morphed into Drouth, filling out its lineup into a formidable touring machine and coming into full realization with this latest 'Excerpts From a Dread Liturgy' LP (Translation Loss, out July 31st). A drab descent into a feeding frenzied pit of crush/black/doom/death antics, mangling up past influences without fetishization. A sick blackened brew of new.

BORIS – Loveless

Because you actually never know what you're going to get with this Japanese trio, I kinda expected by song title alone this would be an homage to My Bloody Valentine, or at least sort of expected. No, this is 'NO' (the album title), and it appears to be the band's crust/thrash record. That said, there's still searing passages of psychedelic cloud-gazing in the midst of the frenzy, the final half of this track rings with some towering amp-smoulder/feedback we've grown to love this crew for. But, wow, otherwise this one is a surprise even for Boris.

KHTHONIIK CERVIIKS – Δt (Recite The Kriitiikal Mæss)

After a gloriously scabby demo and a cacophonic debut LP, 'Æequiizoiikum' is the second full-length from this German crew, who now have fine-tuned their black/death metal fusion into even more focus. Claustrophobic but spaciously structured, their music sucks you into a tornado with both its stateliness in architecture and its simultaneous barrage to gut everything in sight. LP out on Iron Bonehead July 17th, and a Gimme Metal guest DJ special on the 24th we're pretty excited about.

FANGE – Cafard Celeste

From their newly-dropped 'Poinge' EP (Throatruiner label), France's Fange
dig in deep with a unique brand of powerful, very industrialized metal. Equal parts 'Mind'-era Ministry, Young Gods, Neubauten in spirit, with hard-as-nails death assault thrown into the proceedings. A wholly untraditional, visceral, assault to the senses, mainting mystery while bulldozing with no sign of subtlety.
