Gimme Metal's Top Tracks of the Week

ABYSMAL DAWN, ULTHAR, GRAFVITNIR Among The Top Tracks of the Week

abysmal dawn

Gimme Radio Program Director, Brian Turner, delivers the top 5 jaw-dropping tracks on Gimme Radio.

ULTHAR – Through Downward Dynasties

'Cosmovore' had us all pretty blown away in 2018, but Bay Area's bludgeoningest are taking it up a notch. 'Providence' is out June 12th on 20 Buck Spin, and the blackened/death/misc/whatziz pot where these guys throw all their influences into is manically frothing over with rabid vocals, crazed flip-of-the-switch trajectories and general desperate/brutal attack. With a pedigree coming split from so many other active/overachieving bands, you'd think they'd spread it thin, but Ulthar continues to evolve and mutate into more mighty forms.

GRAFVITNIR – Sphere of the Acasual

After a majestic studio release last year, Swedish mysteriosos Grafvitnir find their 2012 debut NaHash (itself a release of an earlier CDR) out again on the Italian imprint Clavis Secretorvm. Strident melodicism rides high over backdrop of blasted filth, holding tradition tightly in its mitts while spraying schrapnel everywhere.

ABYSMAL DAWN – Coerced Evolution

This LA death metal outfit are back with their first since 2014, 'Phylogenesis' on Season of Mist, focused on de-evolution and this track in particular depicting the scenario where the elite wealthy rulers of society save the world's resources and upload mankind itself to a virtual grid of their control. All musically accented by the band's heavy technical pyrotechnics, crisp, melodic, bludgeoning simultaneously. They'll be doing a DJ special as part of Gimme's relief series in early June.

AUROCH – Coffin Nails

Sorcerific insanity from this Vancouver group now reunited with vocalist Culain for a blasted, quick EP (12" with art etching, CD with some older tracks including from their split with Mitochondrion). 20 Buck Spin continues to spill over with some of the most highend vicious metal out there.

PALE MARE – Zealot

The second album (II) from these Torontonians hit on April 3rd via Seeing Red, a buzzing barn-recorded opus of thick slabs of riffage, humid crushing tones and general malaise sitting heavily on your chest. They paid a fortune for visas that unfortunately are null with the state of things, we hope you can spread the word and even check in for tipjar button action on Gimme's forthcoming 3-way DJ special with labelmates Subtype Zero plus Redefining Darkness artists Angerot. The show airs Tuesday, May 5th 1pm ET/10am PT.
