Hey there tech fiends, it's that time of the week again. Before we dive into today's focus, here's the usual reminder that if you're looking for more sick music, all prior editions of this series can be perused here.
International tech-death supergroup Serocs have been on an impressive tear for years with a litany of sick releases behind them, each stronger than the last. I first started covering them back in 2013 for No Clean Singing after becoming obsessed with their new album at the time, The Next. The album had a very interesting take on technical brutal death metal that felt more like a throwback to older Cryptopsy in a way that few modern tech death bands have ever attempted.
Just few years later and the group returned with their 2015 follow up, And When The Sky Was Opened, that further capitalized on their obscene amount of talent. I loved that one enough to do the full early stream for us here at Metal Injection in 2015! Now that 2018 has rolled around, the group's monstrous new album, The Phobos/Deimos Suite is coming out soon on October 26th via Everlasting Spew Records and we've got an early premiere today for one of it's best songs, "Nihilus".
Today's premiere for "Nihilus" showcases Serocs in their finest form to date, not only due in part to a newly re-tooled line-up full of fresh eye-popping talent each contributing new ideas to Serocs for the first time, but also due to the highly ambitious and obscenely intricate nature of the album. If you're looking for a frenetic skin flaying death metal experience, "Nihilus" will do more than satisfy for just a moment, it'll keep you coming back for more endlessly with a lot to unpack that requires investing a few spins at a minimum to catch it all. While their core sound coming from a place of razor-sharp tightly coiled chaos indebted to Cryptopsy is still at the base of what they deliver, their type of technical brutal death metal also has a strong dissonant flair, sharp jackhammering grooves, portions of more "straightforward" brutality, grind influenced connective tissue bursts, and so forth to make the style played all their own.
What the band and label had to say about “Nihilus” will also help you to dive deeper into the song, the album, and their subtle other influences at play besides Cryptopsy, especially when it pertains to songs with a higher portion of those other influences like "Nihilus" does. Their statement regarding the song and album is as follows "Nihilus" is the second single chosen for the release of the album "The Phobos/Deimos Suite". This song deals with the main character of TPDS story and his destructive and selfish nature. How nothing seems to matter once you alienate from everyone but yourself. The music is mainly a tribute to old tech-death bands of the early 2000s, specifically SoP’s first album. It features riffs as old as 2008 and as new as 2018.
